The Success of the Cyanotype Workshop at Art Mash, North Devon
It was wonderful to host a cyanotype workshop recently at Art Mash in North Devon, where creativity and community came together to enjoy this historic photographic process. The event was made possible through the generosity of Lisa, who kindly provided the space to Focused Light free of charge. Thank you, Lisa!
The workshop offered the chance to explore the cyanotype technique, which dates back to the 19th century and is renowned for its iconic Prussian blue prints. Using ultraviolet light and simple chemistry, participants experimented with their own acetates, incorporated found foliage, and worked with supplied negatives. Each artist’s unique approach resulted in a diverse array of creations, ranging from delicate X-ray-style prints to bold artistic designs.
Attendees were particularly enthusiastic about the hands-on nature of the session. Many enjoyed working with natural materials such as locally collected leaves and folige, while others brought personal touches like custom acetate negatives. The interaction between materials, light, and water gave every print a distinct character, and the process of watching the cyanotypes intensify during development was a highlight.
Creative Cyanotype Workshop
The event received glowing feedback from attendees. One participant shared, “It was amazing to see how simple materials could create such beautiful results.” Another commented, “I loved how interactive and experimental the whole process felt.”
The workshop not only highlighted the timeless appeal of cyanotypes but also demonstrated the importance of accessible art spaces like Art Mash. A huge thanks goes to Lisa for her generosity and commitment to fostering creativity in the North Devon community.
With such a warm reception, there’s no doubt that this workshop will inspire future events, bringing more people together to discover the joy of cyanotype printing.
We hope to run more workshops in the future. Please keep an eye on Focused Light’s shop
