Why This Workshop Matters for Survivors
Warhammer miniature painting turned out to be such a mindful, quiet, and therapeutic activity. Although I could appreciate the benefits of this workshop, I was initially unsure about its popularity. That worry was unnecessary, this session proved to be one of the most well-attended.
Guided by Rob, a professional miniature painter, we selected our figures and settled into a comfortable silence that spoke of relaxation, focus, and ease. Concentration and presence of mind were needed to dab, jab, and gently apply the paint to each figure. Thankfully, I had remembered my reading glasses, though I suspect I also needed a free-standing magnifier!
Mental health and wellbeing
What struck me most was the therapeutic quality of the process. The act of slowing down, paying close attention to the smallest details, and allowing the world to fade away for a while was calming. Each brushstroke became a moment of stillness. There was no pressure to be perfect, only the gentle rhythm of paint meeting figure. For many, this sort of quiet creativity can bring a sense of control, reduce feelings of stress, and open a space for healing that words alone cannot always reach.
For Rob, what began as a hobby became a passion, a healing process, and eventually a business. His own journey is a reminder of how creative practices can support resilience and recovery. It was wonderful to be able to share this workshop through Focused Light with other survivors, offering not just an artistic activity, but a mindful practice that encourages wellbeing.
We’re already looking forward to session two, another chance to pick up a brush, quiet the mind, and discover the restorative power of painting in miniature.

Feedback from the facilitator: As a facilitator it was an amazing opportunity to share our life long  love of Warhammer and miniatures painting with our fellow survivors. For us, Warhammer is family, and to share that with our Family of Survivors was a special moment. Many years ago we first learnt about Warhammer through a painting workshop, and to now hold our own painting workshop is a huge achievement and a further step along in our healing. We have used Warhammer and miniatures painting throughout our life as a means of healing, relaxation, focus and community, and to now share these things with fellow survivors is very empowering. It also feels important to share vital healing and self-regulation tools that will be potentially useful for others. It was really nice to see how well everyone took to the painting, to see the focus, peacefulness and creativity in the room. It confirms that with a little support and guidance, and perhaps a safe and relaxed space, survivors want to heal, to have community and to share their creativity, and this is inspiring to see.
Looking forward to the next one, after some rest and sleep!!!
Regards,
Rob
